Are you an expert question-asker?
Would you like to be?
Can you think of a person in your world who asks great questions?
Do you know the purpose of asking great questions?
Are you tired of me asking questions yet??!!??
Now, the questions I just asked are not great questions!
Do you know why??
Not only are they rapid fire, they are also closed questions and we'll chat about that in just a minute.
Questions are an extremely powerful, but not often used, tool of a leader. Really of people, in general. Being a good question-asker is typically not natural and is a skill that we need to constantly be developing and practicing.
So, what's so special about great questions?? Glad you asked!
Questions connect. They clarify. They soften defenses & build bridges.
Questions strengthen relationships. Then inform & define. And, they give direction.
Great questions get to the heart of the matter.
Now more on those "closed questions" ... they aren't good. Don't ask questions that can be fully answered with a 'yes' or 'no.' This is the one big no-no for good question asking! - instead, ask in a way that allows for an open-ended response.
Did you have a good day? (yes or no) can be reworded to Which part of your day was the best? What was the hardest part of your day? What did you enjoy most about your day? What is your favorite memory from today?
It does take a little more effort & thought but the end result is worth it!
There is SO much more to say about great questions and there will be a follow-up post soon.
For now, I'd like to leave you with some fun questions that can be used as table talk for events/trainings, in meetings, around the table with family, in the car with friends and just about anywhere you want to deepen relationships and keep the conversation flowing.
